The torch has been passed — Last Day in Pucallpa – heading for Lima!Posted by PJeff in Uncategorized
Hey everyone, Tony here. I am writing to you from Lima, Peru on Tuesday morning since Jake took so long to write last night, I decided to get up early this morning and send this out. Pastor Jeff is still has three days to go with sending uploads anyway so if I am done before he gets up we are good. We are so sorry that we have not been able to send the uploads all week, but we have been writing them everyday so that when the service was available we could catch all of you up on what God has been doing in and through us this week. It is going to be very difficult to put into words just how awesome this week was for the people of Peru, the kids in our youth group, and for me personally. I can tell you all that my absolute favorite thing about this week has been stepping in when the kids have been praying for people and translating what they are saying so that the people here can understand just how powerful are the words being prayed over them. Our kids are so on fire for God and they cry out in boldness, without shame, and with the anointing of the Spirit in their prayers for the people here. It is just so amazing to see and a blessing to experience. Their prayers not only extend to the people of Peru, but over each other, over the leaders of this trip, and over the youth and parents who are back home. My second favorite part of this trip has been our times of devotions and prayer both in the morning and especially at night. Morning has been a time of personal reflection and devotion with God and God has been speaking to me very strongly each morning through the book of Ephesians which talks about unity in the church, in the family, and in spiritual warfare. Surprisingly, with so many of us thrown together into such small quarters for 8 days, the conflicts have been very minimal and almost non-existent. I believe this is due our time spent in prayer with one another and the prayers going up from the people back at home. At night, we have reflected on the things that God did in and through us that day, two people do devotions and then we spend time in prayer on the roof of the boat, however, one night it was in a field after watching “The Passion of the Christ”. It is these times in the evening that I have had some wonderful opportunities to pray with your children individually as the Spirit has led me and to pray over individual kids as a group. Once again, you would be proud of the passion with which your teens pray over one another. Since Joe (our leader) has been to these villages several times before, much of what we have been doing this week has extended to instruction for families in how they are to act according to the Scriptures along with our message of salvation, the giving of food, the instruction of how to obtain clean water along with good personal hygiene, and times of fun playing with the children. We have gotten to be with a village for an entire day and get to know the people much more personally than is possible otherwise. We were really able to focus on some discipleship and raising up local leaders to carry the torch that has been lit and passed by Joe, his team, and our work this week. Unexpectedly, as Jake has described so eloquently above, we were able to some ministry on Monday that was not a part of our original schedule and it turned out to be one of the most rewarding experiences we could have on a missions trip. Too often we come on a trip and we present our message right up to the last minute and then are shuffled away to get to our plane to return again, but yesterday we were able to do something out of the ordinary. We were able to multiply ourselves by taking the dramas that had been so impacting over the week and share them with a local youth group who will be using them in ministry to continue to reach the people of Pucallpa and the surrounding area. This is the reason that this blog has been named as such and then to spend so much time in the church playing with these children who come from such a horrible past, to bring a light into their lives for a day was just such a wonderful and inspiring experience. As I was making music CD’s with my laptop for Jose and Carmen for them to use the human videos here in Peru, I had a large group of children who wanted to see every picture that I had on my laptop both of my family and of our trip here to Peru. We started playing a game where they would guess the names of the kids featured in each of the pictures and they got pretty good with the names of our kids by the time we were done. Erika was the winner, hands down, as the most recognizable (not sure why …. Hmm). But she was closely followed by “Santiago” (James), Leah, Ellie, “La Altisima” (Brooke), and Korina (Corinne). Well, they also got Raquel (Rachael) and me correct every time, but we were sitting with them and that may not be fair. At any rate, your kids were absolutely wonderful on this trip and I am thankful that I was counted worthy to spend this time with them. I was with half of them last year in Nicaragua so I knew them pretty well already as well as working very closely with many of them on the drama team, but it was so nice that those relationships have been strengthened. I also got to know Jake, Justin, Zach F., Lyle, Rachael, Erica, Cherith, Ally, and Deanna much better since our times together before this trip have been limited. I am so thankful to God brought this team together “for such a time as this” as He put all of the right pieces in place for this trip to be the success and inspiration that it was to me. I cannot say enough just how great these kids were in their dramas (it makes their drama leader proud), in their prayers, and did I mention their testimonies. Wow! God is really doing amazing things in the lives of these kids. I had devotions the last night on the boat and the Word that God had given to me to share with them is to be “making the most of every opportunity” when they get home. God has been speaking to all of their hearts about His will and plans for them for the future and the encouragement was to be sure that they are looking to the left and right all along the way to God’s ultimate plan – to realize that every circle in which they find themselves whether it be college, the classroom, athletics, music, the stage, their personal friendships, and most importantly, their homes – these are places where God has specifically placed them to reach particular people that can be best impacted by their testimony. I am counting on each of you as parents and friends to hold them accountable to do this as it is God’s plan for each of us. Shout outs: To Cammy, Brayden, Kyler, Liam and Caelyn: I love you all very much and I am looking forward to seeing you all very soon. I can’t wait to get home and to give you all a hug and tell you all about the people of Peru. Even though I wasn’t with you over the past 10 days, you were all in my heart and on my mind as I ministered to the children and gave instruction on the roles of each member of the family. I trust that my experiences here will continue to help me grow in my relationship with God and to be a better husband and father and a better Godly example in our home. To Mackenzie, Kaitlyn, and Sarge: It was nice to talk with each of you on Skype last night. I know that you guys were used mightily by God in Panama. It was sad being on this trip without the two of you, but God’s plans were to have these two specific teams ordained to the work that he wanted done. To Erika and Rachael: It has been so great getting to know each of you on this trip and it is going to be sad to see you go to college and to Georgia, but we know that God has great plans for you in those places – do not forget to trust in Him to show you how you can be an influence in those new places. To all the parents and other Frequency members: Unfortunately, we were not able to read many blog comments this week, but we thank you all so much for your prayers and your strength at home as we have been gone. Your friends and children are amazing, if I have to be away from my family for 13 days, there is no place else that I would rather spend the time. I hope to work with and get to know many more of you during future trips so start planning now!
OKAY- recap of the day, here we go. Today was our last day of ministry! So sad! But so good! We had an extra long service today in the village because we had to set sail around 4 if we want to make it to Pucallpa in time for tomorrow. Anyway, we walked across the plank and to village through a forest of banana trees! I told my favorite joke the whole way! The banana trees had leaves that were bigger than I am! It was pretty sweet to be walking through a jungle in the Amazon surrounded by all these really loud birds that we thought were monkeys… We eventually made it to the village and it was HOT. Definitely the hottest day so far. We had an absolutely fantastic service where we broke out all our favorite dramas and Wilder-Beast even jumped in on “Walk of Life” and made me laugh so hard that I almost couldn’t even do my part, pahhahaha. The service went really well and by the end of it all we had about 33 salvations! It was extremely hot. We came back to the boat, took a nap, then headed back to finish up and hand out bags of food and Spanish Bibles. We headed back (sprinted back, I don’t know why…) and broke out the trash cans and steel can things on the deck as we sailed into the sunset and out of our tributary and onto the ACTUAL Amazon River! It’s HUGE! I think we all agreed when we said this was the most spectacular thing we’ve ever seen or been a part of. Fosho. We all did one of our Stomp Routines on the deck and it WAS SO COOL. Random native dudes were floating by giving us the WEIRDEST looks, but it was the sickest thing ever, so we didn’t care. After that little adventure we all took pictures and hung out on the top deck (what I like to call the “Poopdeck”) and watched the sun set and the water turn from red to purple to blue to black. We ended the day with pancakes- I mean cornbread *cough cough. They were delicioussssss. Then we had devos lead by Jake and Tony under the stars back on the top deck, which were awesome as well. For a last day of ministry, we definitely had a memorable time. We’re all really going to miss it here. SHOUTOUT TIMEEEEEE! Okay, so in the shoutout video we just made, James and I forgot to mention my dear love, Mackenzi (“I remembered”- Zach). So I dedicate this part of the blog to you, I’m so sorry! Maybe we just wont show you the shoutout video…. J LOVE YOU SOOO MUCH CHICA! Love you too, B.B. J you know who you are… <3 Alrighty! Ally and Brandy here…bloging… This morning, we were greeted by a lovely fog over the river, about 50 kids waiting for us on the shore, and the aroma of French toast and French fries. After breakfast we put together kids goodie bags and bags of food for the villagers. It was super hot outside. Brandy and Rachel went out on the deck to entertain the kids with a circus act made up of cartwheels, miming, and jumping around. The kids enjoyed it. When we went into the village the kids followed us everywhere, so of course we were goofing of to entertain them. Long story short Ally, Brandy, Kelsi, and Erica ended up in trashcans. Anyways, then we started out our usual kids program with a stomp routine and some dramas. Following the service we played with the kids. Coloring with them, teaching them little Sunday school songs and blowing bubbles. [Ally got in a tree so the kids couldn’t keep pushing the bubbles back in her face.] We then noticed an injured kid so Brandy, Justin, and Tony proceeded to clean the wound behind his ear and bandage it. He was very grateful. Then it was lunch time, eating a wide variety of delectably delicious comida [food for you non- Spanish folk]. When we finished eating we headed to the basement where we “joyfully” packed even more food bags in a very hot, buggy, crammed, belly of the boat, assembly line style. Followed by a much needed, lovely nap. It was then team picture time on our way back to the village for the night service. We went around in groups inviting the native villagers to our service. Along the way Tony’s group, consisting of Ally, Brooke, Zach F., and James, saw a man with some bottom feeder fishys in a bucket. That was his dinner, they looked so cool with awesome patterns on their scales. Then we did our service where Kelsi shared Vanessa’s [the blind girl who was healed] story. Brandy, Brooke, and Cherith shared their testimonies as well but they spoke in English. Erica, however, shared her testimony in Spanish! She did a great job! After the service one little old geezer told Rachel that it was a gift to him that we were there talking and praying with them. After dinner and the movie we prayed for the people and handed out food bags and Bibles. It was great to see a lot of men give their life to God tonight because you don’t usually see that. We didn’t have enough food bags packed for everyone so we told the 20 people that didn’t get food to come down to the boat to get some. 50 people ended up coming to the boat for food. It was a little frustrating to see the people that we know got food try to get more but it just showed us the desperation these people have. On the plus side, 2 little old ladies left the boat happily being able to see with new glasses tonight. Back on the boat we had devos on the roof courtesy of Zach K. and Brandy. We prayed for Jose [the person coming back to these villages after we leave] it was really inspiring to see where his heart is with God. Okay: shout out time for Brandy! Hola guys, I miss everyone like so so much! Surprisingly, I miss my brothers (haha) and I REALLY miss my parents! I love you guys, and I’m so glad I got to call you even if it was only 3 minutes. I’m so excited to come home and tell you everything in detail, but basically I’ve eaten guinea pig and led several lives to Christ which is real awesome dude! Oh and tonight I got to rap for the guards on our boat…they actually only speak Spanish, but they liked it! I met the most amazing kids ever and I can’t wait to show you all my pictures! But I need sleep haha, so Nick: do work (at Lowes) and “hey who’s driving that car?!” – “I don’t care” haha love you bro. Joey: you’re an awesome little bro and I’m proud to be related to you. Mom and Dad: I miss you lots, but let’s not speak of that and I’ll see you when I get home, (ps: tell Hooch that I miss her). Everyone back at youth, you’re all awesome and keep on keepin on! Melitta I miss you so much it’s really not even funny, we are having a 30-day sleepover when I get back, understood?! And to all my brothers and sisters in youth, I miss you and RUN AFTER GOD!!!! Adios, te amo! (bye, I love you) Love, Brandy! Ally’s turn! Hi guys! I miss you! Mom, I’m glad I got to call the other day! You will have to finish informing me of all the recent happenings when I get home. Dad, guess what! I ate guinea pig, catfish, a bite of cheese cake, the best ice cream I’ve ever tasted in the world, and some black coffee every morning J Robyn, I was really good about taking pictures of Rhoame the first couple days, but I don’t want to risk his life more then I have to, so he will re-appear in the pictures I take in Lima. Halle, I don’t know if you are reading this [mom, tell her to please] but I miss you lots!! I can’t wait to be back in rehearsals…hopefully im not too lost. Haha! There’s a bunch of other people I’m missing too…but just too many to write, you all know you are. Im having so much fun! It’s the most beautiful place ive ever seen! From the morning fog and sunrise, to the jaw dropping sunsets, to the incredible night skies[ I saw 4 shooting stars! 3 in one night!] it’s so beautiful. Love you all!
We came back to the boat for lunch and a breath of fresh air conditioning and then headed back for a night service as well. Lyle, Jake, and Deanna all told their testimonies and then Tony closed out the service all about families and the importance of staying united in God and constantly loving each other. We had a chance to pray with the families and children. When we did this I (Deanna, now) had the opportunity to pray with a single mother and her three children. She shared with me a little about their situation. Apparently the mother and father accepted the Lord together, but about five years ago, the father left. Tears were streaming down her face as she was sharing this. I invited Brooke over so we could talk to her. Tony translated while we told her how much we admire her and respect her for all her hard work. We shared our stories and how similar our pain is. All three of us were in tears. Along with this and many other awesome prayer moments, we especially made an effort to pray for Vanessa – the little blind girl. Kelsi got her and held her in her lap while we all prayed for her. We circled around her and she ended up closing her eyes and went limp as if she fell asleep. When we stopped, she kept her eyes closed for a couple more minutes. Then she opened her eyes and she was looking around like crazy as if she was seeing new things for the first time. We asked her if she could see certain things and she said, “look at the boat”. Our boat was probably three hundred feet away! Then she looked up and talked about the moon and the clouds. It was amazing to see God’s power in action! Her eyes began to straighten. God visibly healed her! We went back to the boat for dinner, which was amazing, like all the other food. Then we returned to the village to hand out food and to pray for the people. We found Vanessa and her mother was gleaming. Vanessa’s eyes were perfectly straight and she was responding to the flashlight her mom was putting in her face. It was amazing and life changing. We went up on the roof after we left the village and had devos and prayer as a team on the top of the boat. It was so powerful! You can see every single star in the sky out here, its incredible! Jake says he saw a shooting star (: Everything feels comfortable now and each and every time someone has to share a testimony, they do great! You should be proud of every single person on the trip! They are doing great and getting along so well! Deanna – - mommy, I love you. DAVE! Hi (: calah, casey, kate, miranda, shayna, I love you all and miss you so much! And im safe, just like I promised! Almost everyone has read your card (and smelled it) and they think it’s the CUTEST (and the best smelling) thing everrrrrrrrrr J anyway, I miss you and I can’t wait til we have our movie hug (which my friend Ally is planning on video taping, just sayin) anyway, now that my long speech is done, im going to bed cuz it’s……..late. so night night!! Now that that is done, it’s time for Justin Jobe and I (Zach Ferguson) to give you people a rundown of what happened today. -first program. Soccerrr. Walking through the mud. deanna, brooke, Rachael, Corinne. Guinnie pig. Second program. Praying with families. Face painting. Glasses. Little pig in village. Bug bites. Re-filling food bags. Cheesecake. Kelsi met a girl named Kelsey, Justin ate an orange like an apple. To put this primitive summary into detail, we started off the day with a tiring awakening for early morning prayer. Then we walked 15 minutes to through the forest and it was MUDDY. A few times, we had to cross these log bridges…which were wobbly… over mud… I slipped… sorry dad, your left boot is plastered in some dirt and mysterious liquid mixture. When we made it to the village, we did our usual dramas and testimonies. What was different was the fact that in the morning, people were surveyed on who drank the water from the river, who gets sick on a regular basis, who wanted to have pure water, and who wanted to accept Jesus. Let’s just say that there were a lot of hands raised for each question. After that, we prayed with the children and a few of the adults. Then, we decided that we wanted to challenge some of the natives to a game of soccer. We outnumbered them 11-7 and only played for 20 minutes. So, as a result we were only beaten 4-0(but we still all had a blast). LOL =P On the walk home, I almost slipped on the logs again in the mud, but I caught myself. Unfortunately, PJeff said that people with boots should just walk in the mud and save room on the wobbly logs for people without boots. In other words, Deanna, Brooke, Rachel, and Corinne FOOLISHLY listened to him. Let’s just say they got stuck in three foot deep cement (mud). Brooke nearly fell on her face. We will probably explain the Guinea pig tomorrow. |
